The upcoming Summer release, Hancock, starring Will Smith, Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron, will be treading ground that has been well trod in the past - and not always to great success: Super Heroes and comedy. However, this film has at least a couple of things going for it; First off, it is a Will Smith project, and he has a solid track record of delivering box office success by delivering an entertaining experience to his target audiences. Second, and maybe of more interest to the critic in me, is the movie’s exploration of the themes of redemption, personal responsibility and accountability - although on a much more heroic scale.

Albeit a comedy, with Hancock the movie Will Smith and company take a look at just how much the general public is willing to put up with from their ‘heroes’. By presenting a largely unsympathetic character ( a homeless alcoholic with little regard
for the costly property damage and disruption he has been causing to his city, Los Angeles), and putting him through the public wringer, the filmmakers will possibly be giving their Summer popcorn-crunching audiences an unexpected (yet subtle) lesson about the individual’s responsibility to their own community.

American Idol contestant, Asia’h Epperson was wrongly voted off the seventh season of Fox’s wildly popular singing competition. Unlike those to get boot before her, Asia’h had the talent to go the distance and her ousting was a grave mistake which now can not be undone. This multi-talented, mini diva belted out ballads previously made famous by vocal powerhouses like Whitney Houston and Celine Dion during her too short run on the show. She sang All By Myself one week and followed it up with I Wanna Dance With Somebody the very next week. Asia’h’s father was tragically killed in a car accident just two days before her Atlanta, Georgia audition, yet some how sure found the inner strength to push forward. While being kicked off on March 6, was an unfortunate turn of events for the 19 year old, this is certainly not the end of her career, but instead only the beginning.

Fan favorite reality television show, Dancing with the Stars, is poised to return on March 17, with its season six debut. The hugely successful series pairs twelve celebrities with professional dance partners. Together they vie for a coveted championship trophy. Each week a couple is eliminated, until there is just one pair standing. Past winners include Kelly Monaco, Drew Lachay, Emmitt Smith, Apolo Anton Ohno and Helio Castroneves. The show is wildly successful from a ratings standpoint as the audience tunes in each week to cheer on their favorite couple and call in to cast a vote on who should be sent home. Adding to the show’s devotion is a North American Tour that has been held after the season concludes. This season’s odds on favorite is Olympic gold-medalist and figure skating sensation Kristi Yamaguchi. She will be competing against eleven other celebrities including Marlee Matlin, Monica Seles, and Steve Guttenberg.
